Base de cotización: what your cuota is calculated on

The base de cotización (contribution base) is the amount your cuota de autónomos and your future benefits (pension, sick leave) are calculated on. Under the real-earnings system you choose a base within the bracket that matches your income.

The base de cotización is the amount your cuota de autónomos is calculated on. It isn't what you pay: it's the reference used to work out what you pay and, above all, what you'll receive down the line.

It matters for two reasons. Short term, it sets your monthly cuota. Long term, it determines your benefits: the base you contribute on today is what defines your pension, your sick leave or your cessation benefit. Contributing on the minimum makes the cuota cheaper, but also cuts that coverage.

Under the real-earnings system, you choose a base within the bracket that matches your income, and you can adjust it several times a year.

How Cece sees it

The base de cotización is one of the few places where you decide how much future you're buying. Paying the minimum is always tempting, but it's worth seeing it for what it is: a balance between today's cuota and tomorrow's safety net.

Frequently asked questions

What happens if I contribute on the minimum base?

You pay the lowest possible cuota, but you also reduce your future benefits: pension, sick leave or cessation of activity are calculated on your base de cotización. It's a balance between saving now and having better coverage later.
