The cuota de autónomos, no end-of-month surprises

The cuota de autónomos is the monthly payment to Social Security for being registered as a freelancer in Spain. Since 2023 it's based on your real net earnings: the more you earn, the more you pay, with brackets you can adjust up to six times a year.

The cuota de autónomos is the monthly payment you make to Social Security for being registered as a freelancer. It gives you access to public healthcare, your pension and benefits, and you pay it whether you're invoicing a lot, a little or nothing that month.

How is the cuota calculated?

Since 2023, the cuota is based on real net earnings: it's calculated on what you actually earn (income minus expenses), split into brackets. The higher your profit, the higher the cuota. In 2026 the lowest bracket is around €200/month and rises from there.

The upside of this system: you can change brackets up to six times a year, so if you earn less one year you adjust the cuota to reality instead of being stuck with a forecast that no longer holds.

If you're registering for the first time, for the first 12 months you pay the tarifa plana of €80/month instead of your bracket.

How Cece sees it

The cuota lands all 12 months, August and the slow months included. That's why it's worth looking at the whole year, not the month: if your annual earnings cover 12 cuotas, the slow months stop being scary.

Frequently asked questions

How much is the cuota de autónomos in 2026?

It depends on your net earnings: the system works in brackets based on what you earn, and in 2026 the lowest bracket is around €200/month, rising from there. If it's your first registration, the first 12 months you pay the tarifa plana of €80/month. Your exact bracket depends on your profit and the table is updated each year.

Do you pay the cuota de autónomos in August?

Yes. The cuota is charged all 12 months of the year, whether you take a holiday or not. That's why your buffer for August should cover at least the month's cuota and your fixed costs.
