The proforma invoice: an offer, not an invoice

A factura proforma (proforma invoice) is a preliminary document detailing an offer or quote before the real invoice. It has no tax validity: it creates no IVA obligation, doesn't count as income and doesn't replace the final invoice.

A factura proforma (proforma invoice) is really a proposal in the shape of an invoice. It lets the client see in advance what you'll charge and how: items, amounts, taxes. But it isn't a real invoice.

That's why it has no tax effect: it generates no IVA to pay, doesn't count as income and doesn't carry your official numbering series. When the client accepts and the work is confirmed, you issue the real invoice, which is the one with validity.

How Cece sees it

The proforma is ideal for quoting without committing for tax: the client sees the detail, and you generate no taxes until the work is firm. Just don't confuse it with the invoice: the final one is what counts.

Frequently asked questions

Does a proforma invoice count as income?

No. A proforma invoice is an informational document with no tax validity: it generates no IVA, doesn't count as income and doesn't replace the invoice. The income and taxes are generated by the final invoice.
