Alta censal: registering with the tax office

The alta censal is the procedure to register with the tax office as a freelancer, using the modelo 036 or 037. In it you declare your activity, your epígrafe, your tax obligations and your address. The 037 is the simplified version of the 036.

The alta censal is the first step to becoming a freelancer with the tax office. With the modelo 036 or 037 you tell the tax office you're starting an activity: what it is, which epígrafe it falls under, which taxes you'll declare and where your domicilio fiscal is.

The difference between the two is convenience: the 037 is the simplified version, valid for most individual freelancers; the 036 is the full one, for cases with more particularities (intracommunity operations, certain regimes). It's free and done online.

How Cece sees it

The alta censal is only half the procedure: it registers you with the tax office. To start working you also have to register with Social Security (in the RETA). Both things, and you're a freelancer.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between the modelo 036 and 037?

The 037 is the simplified version of the alta censal, valid for most individual freelancers. The 036 is the full one, needed in cases with more particularities, such as intracommunity operations or certain special regimes.

Does registering with the tax office register me as a freelancer?

It's half the process. The alta censal (036/037) registers you with the tax office; you also have to register with Social Security, in the RETA. With both done, you're a freelancer.
